Ads in ChatGPT Are Here: What Business Owners Need to Know

Your customers used to Google it.

Now a lot of them ask ChatGPT.

"Best med spa near me."

"Which CRM should a small team use?"

"How do I fix my Shopify checkout?"

And as of 2026, some of those answers come with an ad underneath.

What Actually Launched

Here’s the timeline, straight from OpenAI:

  • February 2026: OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT for logged in adult users on the Free and Go plans in the U.S.
  • May 2026: OpenAI added cost per click buying (on top of cost per thousand impressions) and started rolling out a beta self serve Ads Manager.
  • August 2026: Ads expanded to the UK, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea.

Paid plans like Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise don’t see ads.

How ChatGPT Ads Work (So Far)

According to OpenAI:

  • Ads are clearly labeled as sponsored and separated from the answer
  • Ads don’t influence what ChatGPT says in its response
  • Advertisers don’t get access to users’ chats or personal details, only aggregated performance data
  • Ads aren’t shown to users identified or predicted to be under 18, or next to sensitive topics like health and politics

OpenAI describes the placement as showing up in "active and decision oriented" moments. People comparing options. People deciding what to do next.

That’s the opportunity. Someone asking ChatGPT to compare options is often further along than someone scrolling a feed.

Should You Test It?

Maybe. But not first.

ChatGPT ads are new. Formats, targeting, and reporting are still being built. Early channels reward testers, but they punish businesses that aren’t ready.

You’re ready to test if:

  • Your Google and Meta conversion tracking is clean and trusted
  • You know your target cost per lead or cost per sale
  • Your landing pages already convert well on other channels
  • You can set aside a small test budget you’re willing to learn from

You’re not ready if:

  • Your current ads are losing money and you don’t know why
  • You can’t tell which channel your sales come from
  • Your site leaks visitors before they convert

How to Prepare Either Way

  1. Answer real questions on your site
AI answers pull from clear, specific content. Vague pages get skipped.
  2. Build a landing page for conversational traffic
These visitors arrive mid decision. Give them comparison, proof, and a clear next step.
  3. Tighten your tracking
A new channel is useless if you can’t measure what it produces.
  4. Start small and measure new customers
Judge the test on revenue, not impressions.

The Bigger Opportunity

Search is splitting.

Some of your customers still Google. Some ask AI. Most do both.

The businesses that win won’t be the ones who jump on every new ad platform first. They’ll be the ones whose website converts no matter where the click comes from.

What We Don’t Know Yet

It’s early, so be honest about the unknowns:

  • How well targeting works for small and local businesses
  • What typical costs per click and per lead look like
  • How ChatGPT ad traffic converts compared to Google search traffic

Anyone quoting you firm benchmarks for ChatGPT ads right now is guessing. Treat your first budget as tuition, set a clear cost per lead you’re willing to pay, and measure it against the channels you already know.

Final Thought

ChatGPT ads are worth watching and, for the right business, worth testing.

But a new traffic source doesn’t fix an old conversion problem.

Fix the leaks first. Then go where your customers are asking.
